Realistic Fabric Portraits - May 17, 2008

Realistic Fabric Portraits is perfect for quilters who think they cannot draw.  Start with a photograph and you, too, will be accepting compliments for your skills.  Award-winning artist and quilter, Marilyn Belford, will guide you step-by-step through the techniques that enable you to produce realistic fabric portraits of loved ones.  In this class, you will learn how to use the computer to adjust photos, appliqué by fusing, deal with the features on a face and use thread painting for the finishing touches.  Good basic sewing skills are necessary in this machine class.  Five Lessons.  Extra week after Lesson Four.  See Supply List and Gallery for previous student work.

Art for Quilters - February 9, 2008

Open up your horizons.  Marilyn Belford shows you how to bring the basic tools of an artist to the world of fabric.  From a still life to a landscape, she explains how to get exciting results by applying the artist’s methods and composition tools to your quilting.  Learn how you can create quilts of emotion and depth.  This course will give you a new perspective that will change how you approach your quilting projects.  Simple exercises will let you practice what you learn without a major project commitment.  All levels.  Four Lessons.  See Supply List.   Class starts February 9.  Registration begins one month prior to opening date.

ARTISTS REVISITED[May 10, 2008]  Marilyn Belford.  Filter famous works of art through your mind’s eye and your fabric stash to create anything from Gotta Be Gauguin to DayGlo Degas. (5 lessons) $46


Have you always wanted to see a Rembrandt or a Cezanne hanging on your living room wall?  Now you can.  Learn how to translate a work of art by your favorite artist into a fabulous fabric wallhanging.  Marilyn will guide you, step by step, from selecting the artwork, choosing and applying the fabric through free-motion embroidery and quilting right up to hanging the finished art quilt on the wall.  No paints are used.  Her methods employ only fabric and threads to recreate the artistry of the tableau of your choice.  Class includes a choice of three  patterns of famous art works or instructions for finding copyright-free pictures of other art.  Five Lessons.  Sewing level: intermediate to advanced.  No special drawing skills are necessary.  The illustration is Marilyn’s interpretation of a Georgia O’Keefe painting.  There will be an extra week between Lessons Two and Three, and two weeks extra after lesson 5
